A Message from The Hon. Hilary M. Weston
As global citizens, we all benefit from books that have the power to inform and expand our collective knowledge. In supporting Writers’ Trust of Canada’s national and international nonfiction prizes, our Foundation hopes to encourage writing that demonstrates rigor and research, influences our shared perspectives, and builds bridges where once there were none. This is a unique opportunity for Canadian authors to celebrate their international peers while at the same time promoting their own work on the world stage.

Mrs. Weston and The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation have been steadfast supporters of Writers’ Trust of Canada since 2011. We are honoured that her extraordinary legacy will continue through the presentation of the Hilary Weston International Award and the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction.
An author herself, the late Hon. Hilary M. Weston was an ardent, lifelong supporter of Canadian writers and literature. She believed that the art of writing in its many forms is essential to understanding our world and each other. In recognition of this and of Mrs. Weston’s enduring commitment to Writers’ Trust of Canada, the Weston International Award has been renamed the Hilary Weston International Award in her honour.
The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation has made a multi-year funding commitment to Writers’ Trust of Canada to elevate and embolden nonfiction writers in Canada and around the world.
Beginning in 2023, the Hilary Weston International Award and the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction have provided more than $230,000 in direct support to writers each year. Through this investment, the Foundation champions excellence in nonfiction, fosters connections between Canadian and international writers, and encourages the exchange of ideas on issues of global importance.
Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction
Awarding the top Canadian nonfiction of the year
The Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction is given annually for excellence in the category of literary nonfiction, which includes essays, history, biography, memoir, commentary, and criticism. The winning book demonstrates a distinctive voice as well as a persuasive and compelling command of tone, narrative, style, and technique. This award has been supported by The Hon. Hilary M. Weston since 2011 and is currently funded by The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation. Beginning in 2023, the prize purse has increased from $60,000 to $75,000.
